The Nature Photography of Joseph Wald
It is Sunday October 4, 2026, as I write this. Much of what I have been doing with photography has been the same as when I last uploaded. I have continued watching the hummingbirds in what time I have left with them. I tend to see the last one of the year by October 15. … Read more
As I write this, it is August 25, 2026. I have spent some time watching hummingbirds as they pass by my deck. At one point, a hummingbird visited some flowers that we grew from seed this year. While I have been able to photograph them in flight many times over the years of observation, this … Read more
Since getting back from Europe, I have not been out with my camera as much as I had been. I suppose a part of that is because I just bought more memory and it seems like I have gone through a lot of it already. If you have read some of my previous posts, you … Read more
At around 10 PM on July 15, 2026, I got back to Virginia after a two weeklong trip to Europe. While I had previously traveled a fair amount throughout America by car, this was my first time leaving America. It was interesting to see things outside of America. I spent a week in Italy and … Read more
On Mother’s Day of 2026, I was finally able to replace a camera that was not working properly. The camera had not been working well since the summer of 2024 after getting back from our South Carolina trip, and I had been getting increasingly frustrated with it as the issues continued to get worse over … Read more
We recently had a week of rain. Often with Virginia weather, I miss the weather in the desert I lived in until just before I turned twelve. The past few days have been nice as we can finally see the blue sky again. During the week of rain, I stayed on the deck. As I … Read more
As I write this, it is May 22, 2026. It has been hard to get out with the camera this past week, but I have been getting out anyway. Two days ago, and for several days before, it had been getting above ninety degrees. While I prefer the warmth to cold, above ninety degrees in … Read more
Today is May 16, 2026, and I saw the elusive Virginia panther. I watched from behind as it rested. Of course, it was just a “domesticated” cat that was in a neighbor’s yard. With cats, I don’t think domesticated is quite the right word, but it is for dogs as while dogs basically always want … Read more
After celebrating Mother’s Day a day early with my mom at her request, I decided to go look at some cameras again as my camera has been malfunctioning. I bought a camera, and I am happy that I did. With the camera I bought in 2018, I have been having a lot of issues. I … Read more
Before saying anything else in this post, I thought that I should say that while I don’t have a way to print pictures set up on the website yet, I can print pictures for those who know me. At least for those who live close enough to me, if you want a picture, but don’t … Read more
As spring tries to overtake winter, the weather has been crazy. Not all that long ago, the temperature was at eighty degrees. Then, the temperature dropped enough overnight that we got snow. Luckily, the snow did not last the night. I have been concerned about the owls as through the winter, I saw them just … Read more
As I write this, it is February 16, 2026, and today was the third day that I have taken my camera out since it snowed. Unfortunately, the paths that I usually walk on to do my photography have a lot of snow and ice on them still, so I turned back before I got too … Read more
The day before a major snowstorm, I had gone out during the early afternoon, and I found three of the barred owls that live in this area. While taking pictures again in the evening, I saw some of the owls perched in the pine trees. The first owl that I saw was perched around halfway … Read more
As I write this, it is halfway through the first month of 2026. I missed uploading onto this blog last month because I couldn’t get what I had written edited before I traveled to see my sister and her husband in Florida for the holidays. Whatever holidays that you may celebrate, I hope that you … Read more
A few days ago, as I walked through the neighborhood with my camera, I met someone who was biking. They told me that they recognized me from when I used to bike a lot through the neighborhood and then said that there was an owl up ahead. They decided to lean their bike on its … Read more
For several months during the summer, I did not see any blue herons at the pond near my house. At some point, I ran into some people while I was out with my camera who live closer to the pond than I do. They told me that a heron had been injured. Before I could … Read more
As it continues cooling down outside, I know that winter is just around the corner. The colder it gets, the more I will be longing to go south in an attempt to escape the cold, but I know like so many others, I must stay put. I know that I must attempt to make the … Read more
My mom and I recently drove out to Florida to visit with my sister and brother-in-law. We brought my dog, Luna, with us and she got to play with their dog. They seemed to have a lot of fun playing with each other on land, but he was not happy when she got into the … Read more
In 2016, I went to Idaho for my grandpa’s funeral. My grandma wanted me to have his telescope because she knows that just as my grandpa did, I like astronomy and science. I spent many nights observing things in the night sky like Saturn and its rings along with Jupiter and its moons. On several … Read more
When this website was first created, I had set out to write at least one blog a month. I have not been writing much for the past two years. With this post, I hope to start uploading consistently to the blog again. A lot has happened like my sister graduating from an optometry college and … Read more
Over the course of the past several months, I took a long break from taking pictures and writing blogs for the website. I have started getting out with the camera again the past few weeks. I have seen some otters, blue herons, owls, and woodpeckers. There are some other people in the area … Read more
After I was given my grandpa’s telescope, I spent a lot of time looking at stuff in the night sky. I went out with the telescope every clear night. It wasn’t long after I got the telescope that I joined an astronomy club. They would meet at two different fields that were supposed to … Read more
As I sit by the lake that I often go to, I sometimes see green herons. I was surprised when I first saw them as they are so much smaller than blue herons. While a blue heron’s wingspan can get to around six feet, the green heron’s wingspan only gets around twenty-six inches. … Read more
I wanted to talk about what goes on behind the pictures that I take. There is one thing in particular that I want to talk about which is my dog. My dog, Luna, a black Labrador retriever, helps me a lot with my wildlife photography. I have taken pictures for basically my whole life … Read more
For a couple years, I have been trying to get a picture of a bald eagle. Often, I traveled out to a state park that I heard had one of the highest populations of eagles in Virginia hoping that I would get a picture of an eagle. Unfortunately, that picture never manifested. One … Read more
On many morning walks with my dog, we pass by a pond. On the opposite side of the pond from the path, we often see a blue heron. Sometimes it will land on two branches that stick out over the water, while other times, it will be among the cattail plants. Sometimes as we … Read more
I have been fascinated by wolves for a long time. That fascination led me to go to a wildlife refuge in North Carolina where the only wild Red Wolves in the world live. Unfortunately, I was not able to see the wolves. I did however see a lot of black bears. One of my … Read more
