Hummingbirds and a New Lens

It is Sunday October 4, 2026, as I write this. Much of what I have been doing with photography has been the same as when I last uploaded. I have continued watching the hummingbirds in what time I have left with them. I tend to see the last one of the year by October 15. I am sad to see them go and I am looking forward to them returning next spring.

One thing that has changed since my last post is that I bought a new lens. This lens is a 16mm f1.8 and offers the widest angle out of the three lenses that I have. I also have a 28-70mm and 200-600mm lens. My 200-600mm lens is what I have used for years to photograph wildlife.

One thing that is interesting with the 16mm lens is how close an object can be and it will still focus on it. With this lens, whatever you are photographing can basically be touching the lens and still be focused on. With the 200-600mm lens, you need to be around eight feet away.

Since getting this lens, I have only taken it on some walks around the neighborhood. I feel like I will need some time to really figure out how to best work with this lens as it is a bit different than working with the 200-600mm lens. I have tried using it to photograph some small plants and mushrooms among other things.

The 16mm lens is almost touching the mushrooms in this picture.

I am hoping to take my camera and lenses out this fall as the leaves change. I have a few places in mind of where to visit and with some luck, I will get the timing right. With photography, unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you will get the results you want whether you missed the time that you needed to be somewhere or you just could not figure out how to compose the image. Hopefully, I will have some luck in getting both to work out this year.
