A Virginia Spring

As spring tries to overtake winter, the weather has been crazy. Not all that long ago, the temperature was at eighty degrees. Then, the temperature dropped enough overnight that we got snow. Luckily, the snow did not last the night.

I have been concerned about the owls as through the winter, I saw them just about every time that I went out. For the past three weeks, I haven’t seen them. I know that it could be because they are doing things revolving around nesting, but there are tons of people riding on motorcycles on the path despite not being allowed to as per the signs by several of the entrances to the paths and they go through the paths honking their horns. Could the owls and perhaps some other wildlife have been scared away? From previous years of observation, I know that there were at least two pairs of owls along the path that much of my photography takes place on and I am hoping that none of them have moved on.

As April nears, I have been thinking a lot about hummingbirds. On the east coast of America and Canada, the only type of hummingbird that comes to nest is the ruby throated hummingbird. I have heard the reason for that is that the ruby throated hummingbird is the only one that has the right adaptations to fly across the gulf. Others need to travel overland, which is why you see so many more types of hummingbirds in the west.

In 2025, it was a disappointing year for hummingbirds where I live and I was not the only person in the neighborhood to notice that. In years before, I could expect to see at least one hummingbird every fifteen minutes, or so. I saw them so often that I knew what branches they liked to land on and their usual flight paths. In 2025, I could wait all day, every day for a week and see none. I am hoping that 2026 will be full of these amazing, beautiful birds.

I recently finished a book that my grandma had recommended some time ago. The name of the book is The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. It was a relatively short book that I finished upon the third reading. I thought that it was interesting and since reading it, I have moved onto some other books that I will be able to mention and perhaps talk about once I am finished with them.
